John Smith Townes was born on October 21, 1892, in Danville, Virginia. He was the second of four children born to William Townes, Sr. and Emma Smith Townes. His siblings were William, Jr., Annie, and Louise. John’s father, William Sr., was a successful businessman and owned a number of businesses in Danville, including a funeral home.
